Top Ten Most Iconic Hip Hop Hairstyles of the 90's Golden Era

The 90's in hip hop was an innovative area, Expression wasn't only in music but in the way artists were aesthetically presented. One of the most interesting contextual snapshots of 90's hip hop were the hairstyles that were in trend at the time, Many of these haircuts were a representation of the movements occurring at the time such as the Nations of the Gods & The Earth and developed alternative subcultures which resulted in hairstyles such as dreadlocks becoming being integrated into hip hop culture. Many of the haircuts originating from west-coast hip-hop  represented thug culture, and had an abrasive look that represented what has happening in this area at this time. This article will represent the relationship between hip hop culture and hairstyles, but more specifically draw parallels between them by analyzing the most distinctive and memorable hairstyles in 1990's hip hop.

10. Ol' Dirty Bastard

Ol' Dirty Bastard hair can best be described as naturally developed dreadlocks with an undercut. Many believe Ol' Dirty Bastards hairstyle symbolized his wild personality and crazy behavior. This is definitely plausible, his drug fueled rants and court cases not only proved that he was one crazy acting motherfucker, but he was also one crazy looking motherfucker.

9. Ice Cube during NWA

The Jheri Curl, it came about from the cultures before hip-hop and became adopted by later artists (more specifically west coast. Michael Jackson and the movie "Coming to America" made it famous, Icecube made it gangster.

8. Eminem

Although this hairstyle was closer towards the end of the 90's it created a huge buzz in the media. The hairstyle actually came about because Eminem did it as a joke before his first album came in, Dr Dre walked in the room and laughed, and told him to leave it because it was the perfect final touch.
